How to Support Small Businesses During the Coronavirus Outbreak
By Lorena Schott | March 20, 2020
We are all feeling the impact of COVID-19 in some way or another. Small businesses are the backbone of New Mexico and need your support at this time now more than ever. We know that staying home and avoiding all social gatherings is important, so we have compiled a few ways you can help support businesses from a distance.
BUY A GIFT CARD AND USE IT LATER
As a promise to return to support them, purchase gift cards to your favorite local shops and restaurants. This small act can help keep businesses open while we all stay at home. This puts money in the pocket of your favorite store owner today to help them cover operating expenses and to help assure a strong tomorrow.
ORDER TO-GO MEALS
You can still pick up food to go, and these businesses are making an extra effort to make to-go and curbside orders extra easy and safe.
TIP A LITTLE EXTRA
Leave a little extra cash for service workers – they especially are going to need the help. Consider a full tip on takeout orders, and leaving a little extra for the kitchen staff, too.
SHOP ONLINE OR OVER THE PHONE
Many retailers have online shops. Use this time to check out their online offerings. Reminder: Some shops that don’t offer online shopping are happy to take an order over the phone and have it delivered to you during this time – so don’t hesitate to ask!
SOCIAL CURRENCY
While there’s a lot of content circulating about COVID-19 right now, social media is the perfect tool for supporting small businesses; shop Instagram sales, like and comment on brand content, share about your favorite purchases online and plug the ones that need more support. You can even leave a positive Yelp or Google review. Sometimes just knowing that people do recognize their contribution to our community gives a little extra boost.
BUY AT-HOME ACTIVITIES AND ONLINE COURSES FROM SMALL BUSINESSES
What a wonderful era of technology we live in. We are lucky to be able to take online courses and gather with others online in a digital world. Take advantage of these unique offerings by small businesses trying to stay open.
THESE ARE JUST A FEW IDEAS TO HELP SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES IN YOUR COMMUNITY. NOW MORE THAN EVER, THEY NEED YOUR HELP!
